Danceology Radio Turn Up The Music!
What first inspired you to become a DJ?
Listening to my older brothers very early Monster Jam / Cream tapes.
Who were your biggest musical influences growing up?
Judge Jules , Pete tong , Pez Tellett.
How did you break into the scene?
Around 2007/2008 under my old alias (Mac & Taylor) my tunes started getting played by Judge Jules on radio 1 and also received the coveted “tried and tested” record of the week on his show multiple times and then support quickly followed by the likes of Tiesto , Armin van Buuran , Paul Van Dyk and pretty much every A-list DJ of that genre at the time started playing our tracks and was then asked to be special guests on Tiestos Clublife radio show to do a guestmix on the back off this . We were then for about 5/6 years playing all over the world at some of the biggest events and festivals including the likes of Planet Love, Monday Bar, Black and White Cruise and also on Deadmau5 world tour playing right after him to over 7000 people in Brno (Czech Republic) which then lead onto us playing main Stage at many events/festivals after that . .
How would you describe your sound in three words?
I am a multi genre producer/engineer/ghost producer.
Do you prefer vinyl, CDJs, or digital setups—and why?
I would say vinyl because the art of DJ’ing/beat matching originates from this and it’s also how I learnt and started . As I call it “Proper DJ’ing” no sync buttons and screens etc.
What’s the most memorable gig you’ve ever played?
Probably the Deadmau5 “Mau5trap Tour” in May 2009. He’s my favourite producer so being booked by him was a huge honour and was at that point the biggest crowd I had played to (over 7000 people in Bobycentrum arena). Was great to spend the weekend with him also chatting and drinking beers talking about music production. Also gave me the taste of playing to huge crowds and what to expect and how to deal with it etc.
Any funny or unexpected stories from behind the decks?
I once swigged the “ash tray” bottle by accident behind the decks at a festival and nearly threw up much to the amusement of the other DJ’s on stage ha.
What’s your dream venue or festival to play at?
Probably EDC in Vegas . Love Vegas and never played there.
Do you produce your own tracks or remixes?
Yes , been producing for nearly 20 years.
How do you keep your sets fresh and avoid repetition?
I always have fresh tracks/remixes what no one else will have as I have my own productions.
What’s your process for discovering new music?
There is music everywhere you look these days as soon as you go online/social media so it’s hard not to discover it really . The days are gone of when only certain DJ’s had certain tracks.
Do you think social media has changed how DJs connect with fans?
Yes , people have more insight these days to the person behind the artist and everything more accessible.
What advice would you give to up-and-coming DJs?
Do something different/unique as everyone’s a “DJ” these days unfortunately.
First record you ever bought?
Can’t remember the exact 1 it may of been Ken-Doh – Nakasaki or Lil Mo Yin Yang – Reach (Basement Jaxx Firecracker Remix).
Guilty pleasure track you secretly love?
Bran Van 3000 – Drinking In LA (love it ha).
